Due to the impacts of systemic oppression through genocide, slavery and the missionization of our ancestors, there has been a gap of transmission of cultural knowledge and practice that risks being lost. The impacts of the pandemic have proven to many of our community members that we are at the end of the line, as we have lost countless culture bearers within our communities, some of them being the last ones in the lineages to hold the specialized, ancestral knowledge and practices. At a time where the well-being of the global community is at risk due to climate chaos, these solutions are necessary and support is long overdue.
In the coming months, you will be able to find shared stories and teachings from Indigenous culture bearers on our blog, ‘Sowing Sovereignty,’ and on our social media. The foundation of this project is community-based scholarship, offering invaluable and unique insight and experience.
The collection, documentation and archiving of stories, knowledge, and wisdom within our communities is an essential component of community building, and integral to the purpose Semillistas. This is how we sustain culture.
